When his career life is examined, he graduated from Homs Military Academy in 1955 as a pilot officer. In 1958 he was sent to the USSR to improve aviation training. Later Assad appointed commander of an air squadron. But he expelled from the Syrian Armed Forces in 1961 due to opposing Syria’s withdrawal from the UAR (United Arab Republic).

When Hafez Assad career examined, it’s seen that he also played a key role in the military wing of the Baath Party and important role in the 1963 coup too. Also returned to the Syrian Armed Forces with the rank of major. He was appointed Air Force Command in 1965, then became defense minister in February 1966.

He took an active part in the power struggle between the civil and military wings of the Baath Party between 1969 and 1970. After the intervention in the civil war in Jordan, which culminated this conflict, he seized power in a bloodless military coup on 13 November 1970. In March 1971, he was elected head of state by popular vote.

How is Hafez Assad’s political life? The period when Assad came to power in the administration of the country was the most active years of the Middle East. Assad, who also assumed the Chairmanship of the Baath Party, took steps to save Syria from the loneliness it was pushed into in the Arab World by improving its relations with other Arab states.

Hafez Assad came to the fore as a regional political leader with his strict anti-Israel policies. But continued his policy of conflict with the Baathist government in Iraq. Also he sided with Egypt. He gave broad support to the Palestine Liberation Organization, but after the disagreement with the PLO administration, he tried to create new Syrian-affiliated organizations within this organization. In 1991, he fixed relations with PLO leader Yasser Arafat.

In 1976, despite the opposition of many Arab countries, he intervened militarily to end the civil war in Lebanon. After occupying a large part of Lebanon for six years, the Syrian troops attacked the north and northeast after Israel entered Lebanon in 1982. retreated to their former positions.
